DVD

A medium from 1995

Hear and see

The first DVD was released at the end of 1995, but the first DVD videos and players did not appear on the market until 1997. It revolutionized the entertainment market and replaced the video cassette.

In principle, a DVD works in a similar way to a CD. A bundled beam of light (laser) reads the changes in places that reflect the light well or poorly in a spiral track. DVDs use lasers with a shorter wavelength, which enables smaller laser spots and thus a higher data density.

There is no direct connection between Mahalia Jackson and the DVD. Mahalia Jackson died in 1972, long before the DVD was even specified (mid-1990s). However, the connection is that many of her concerts, documentaries about her life, and her musical works are available on DVD. The DVD has become an important medium for preserving and making Mahalia's musical legacy and history accessible to a wide audience.

Examples of this are:
"Mahalia Jackson - The Power and the Glory" (2 DVDs) One is a documentary about her life, combined with concert recordings from 1961.

"Mahalia Jackson - I asked the Lord" (DVD)
Includes a compilation of their most famous songs.

There are many DVD releases featuring their performances and biographical material.

The DVD thus made it possible to present Mahalia Jackson's art and work to a wider audience in a modern and high-quality format and to archive it for future generations.
