Emma Bell

Road manager

Emma Bell Smothers Pearson was a close friend and road manager of Mahalia Jackson. Their relationship was deep and characterized by mutual support.

An indispensable friend and confidante
Emma Bell belonged to Mahalia's inner circle and was often referred to as one of the "three black musketeers," along with Mahalia and Mildred Falls. Her role went far beyond that of a road manager; she was an important pillar of support in Mahalia's business and personal affairs. Emma Bell not only supported Mahalia in opening "Mahalia's Beauty Salon" as a co-owner, but also helped out in everyday life, for example by teaching Mahalia's secretary Polly how to bake bread.

Support in difficult times
Emma Bell was always by Mahalia's side, especially during difficult times. She accompanied Mahalia when her car was repossessed and even stayed with her for about two weeks when Mahalia felt uncomfortable in her new home. During this time, Mahalia clung to Emma Bell, which illustrates the depth of their bond. Emma Bell also took care of Mahalia when she had health problems, such as sarcoidosis, accompanying her to the hospital and trying to persuade her to eat – even when Mahalia refused. Although she sometimes thought Mahalia's complaints were exaggerated, she remained a loyal companion. Her support was also evident in the courtroom, where Emma Bell was part of Mahalia's entourage, supporting her during her public appearances and challenges.

Shared joy and humor
The friendship was also characterized by humor. Emma Bell was amused by Mahalia's attempts to style her hair before she had formal training. They also shared many happy moments, such as a Christmas in Mississippi, when Emma Bell remembered finding sparklers under the Christmas tree.

Emma Bell traveling with Mahalia
Emma Bell accompanied Mahalia on many trips. Mahalia even asked her to coordinate the opening of the beauty salon in West Virginia. She was also present at important family events, such as Aunt Bell's funeral in New Orleans, where she helped with the preparations. Her presence as part of Mahalia's entourage at public appearances was also recorded in souvenir books.

Emma Bell Smothers Pearson was therefore not only a business partner and colleague, but above all a loyal friend and cousin who accompanied Mahalia Jackson through all the ups and downs of life.
