Elizabeth „Butch“ Thornton

Secretary, assistant

Elizabeth “Butch“ Thornton, who lived in Gary, a suburb of Chicago, for a time, served as Mahalia's personal secretary and assistant. Her duties were varied, ranging from practical tasks to emotional support. She was responsible for preparing cue cards for Mahalia's television appearances, ironing her choir robes, and driving Mahalia's car.

Beyond these responsibilities, Butch was often the person to whom Mahalia confided her most personal thoughts and concerns. Topics such as Mahalia's health, her marital problems, and the stresses of her career were discussed openly with Butch. This deep intimacy underscores the special bond between the two women.

Butch, as she was known to everyone, was also involved in managing Mahalia's finances, checking bills and sorting papers. She always tried to persuade Mahalia to spend more money on herself instead of constantly giving it away to others – a testament to Butch's concern for Mahalia's well-being. Butch often witnessed the tensions between Mahalia and other employees or family members, such as Celystine "Polly" Fletcher.

Important events and observations
Butch Thornton accompanied Mahalia Jackson at many important events. These included television appearances, extensive concert tours (including in Europe and Hawaii in 1968) and important civil rights demonstrations, such as the march in Chicago, where Mahalia and others were attacked.

She often witnessed Mahalia's emotional reactions to her performances and to external events. Butch was present when Mahalia broke her foot. She was also actively involved in planning Mahalia's charity events and her foundation. Butch also witnessed Mahalia's relationship with Minters Galloway and believed that he was not the right husband for Mahalia. Another important event at which Butch stood by Mahalia's side was Mahalia's last concert in Berlin in September 1971. She also supported Mahalia in preparing for interviews and conversations, such as those with Studs Terkel.

Personal characteristics and relationships
Butch Thornton was friends with Rat Hatcher in Gary, and their son Gary served in the Navy. Mahalia threw Butch a birthday party in Gary, which further illustrates their close personal connection. Butch is described as someone who cared deeply about Mahalia's well-being and often witnessed his friend's struggles firsthand.
